Just kidding

After only two hours of having hot water, we left to run some errands and realized that , for the third time in 16 days, the pilot light was out on the water heater and it will not light for us. :(

What is going on?!?!?

We had the same problem with our (one-year-old) water heater, pilot kept going out. We called the manufacturer, and they said to look for a little plastic screen in the bottom front, to keep the dust out. So, we looked, and guess what? It wasn't there! Thanks again, Richmond American Homes!

When we said this, the customer service rep said to try and clean out underneath the heater, around the air intake (this was during our basement build, so there was plenty of dust that the missing screen would have taken care of). I used a rag on a stick, then vaccumed it out. They also sent us the screen free of charge, and no more cold showers, except when needed.

The rep also said that repeatedly lighting the pilot can cause it to fail. Good luck.
